Hello, and welcome to Bats:Both, a new baseball blog written by a couple of guys who work in public relations, Jerry Milani and Tom Biro. The idea for the blog came from our shared interest of all things baseball, along with the fact that we’re both Yankees fans who spent way too much time collecting and trading baseball cards at one time or another. The blog, for lack of a better way to describe it, will include anything from comments we might have had about a recent game, trade, free agent signing, or event we happened to attend, along with some stories about baseball-related things we’ve had the pleasure of doing on a personal and professional level, news about the sport, and more.

The name, which seems to ring true with some fans of the sport, and not others, is mostly referring to the back of the baseball card reference to switch hitters, and a little about the fact that we’re living on opposite coasts of the U.S. The header (at least as it is right now in December of 2009), might take a second to figure out for the uninitiated, but a refresh or two should give it a way, if you haven’t figured it out just yet. The idea to do that was borne out of a stupid “game” that Jerry and I had started playing in the early-to-mid 2000s, when we’d text one another a random baseball player, typically not one still active, who wasn’t a superstar, necessarily, but wasn’t a one-year-and-out player, either. It wasn’t so much “topping” the skill level of the player whose name you received, it was sometimes more about the randomness.

As for us, Jerry will tend to be the one to stump with some 70s trivia, which I had the privilege of not being alive during half of the decade to experience, what number players had when they joined the majors, and have some great reviews of baseball-themed books. On the other hand, I’m much more inclined to remember the fact that Royals OF David DeJesus was dating someone who worked on Don Imus’ radio show before he got kicked off WFAN, where I sat the night Aaron Boone put the Red Sox out of their misery in extras, and the fact that Will Clark’s middle name is “Nuschler.” That’s probably not helpful at all, so I’ll stop before digressing any further.

If you feel like dropping us a line with some news or info that you think we might dig, or the fact that you can’t stand that
