Memorial Day Caps An Improvement Over ‘09

In recent years, Major League Baseball has ventured further into its “look” in support of marketing and charitable initiatives as well as historic celebrations.  Some, like the pink bats for Mother’s Day and universal wearing of 42 on Jackie Robinson Day, have met with mostly favorable response.  Spiderman on the bases?  Not quite.

Which brings me to the commemorative Memorial Day caps teams sported in yesterday’s games.  Last year, the Yankees were forced to wear hideous red caps which looked terrible against their road grays and home pinstripes.

Yesterday’s white caps fit the uniform quite a bit better (even if Brett Gardner, as noted in today’s Star-Ledger, noted that it was worse than his Little League cap).  I suppose I had put the red cap disaster out of my mind, forgetting about the new Memorial Day “tradition,” but of course immediately noticed the white lids when the team began stretching.  To me, it recalled the look of some of the very early Yankees teams.  To others, it might have recalled the Good Humor man, an apt connection on such a hot day in the Bronx.

I like that the Yankees don’t have alternate jerseys, Sunday jerseys, or other alterations to their uniforms, even though I enjoy seeing teams wearing “throwback” or Negro Leagues jerseys from time to time.  I recall only one game that the Yankees wore Negro League jerseys, I believe it was at Detroit in 1996 when they donned N.Y. Black Yankees uniforms.  I think once a year, maybe Old Timer’s Day or another weekend game, or even a road game against a classic rival, I wouldn’t mind seeing them in a Highlanders jersey (say, 1911 next year) or revive the Black Yankees, since they played at the Stadium on occasion.

My three favorite on-field alterations:
- Jackie Robinson 42’s (but one day only, please)
- pink bats, sweatbands for Memorial Day
- occasional throwback jerseys

The more uniforms change…

…the more they go back to being basically the same uniforms teams were wearing before, it would seem.

twinslogo2010Two weeks ago, I read on Heather Zeller’s A Glam Slam that the Minnesota Twins would be commemorating their move to Target Field with more than just some opening day celebrating, with some “new” look jerseys and logos. I say “new” because the “Twins” script has been “slightly altered” from what it was this past year, according to the team’s press release about the changes, which also include a new throwback jersey, circa 1961, and road unis featuring script of the word “Minnesota” that hasn’t been seen since the mid 80s. Don’t get me wrong, I dig on the jerseys and logo tweaks, but…

A week later comes the news that the New York Mets would go retro, as Zeller wisely puts it, with homers for 2010 that bring old and new together in one. You know, sort of like how the Mets’ team colors are an amalgam of New York teams of days past.

I can’t help but wonder if the people who were involved in coming up with the logos the first time around aren’t sitting at home right now saying “I told you so!” about marks and unis they’d designed way back when. While I can understand the wont to bring back some historical uniforms from time to time – hey, we all know we like it – there’s a point when it goes either too far, or too ugly, whichever comes first.

As someone who works in marketing, I can’t help but hope that those in power of making decisions aren’t doing it with more dollar signs in their head rather than business smarts and appealing to fans of all ages. Sure, the latter probably sells product, but when a number of teams are changing their jerseys, hats, and adding slight tweaks and alternates, you can’t help but think the worst.

Check out video of the Twins’ unveiling here. The jersey featuring the updated “Minnesota” script featured above can be purchased here.

Get these (old school) hats while you still can

CarolinaMudcatsAbout a week ago, my friend John passed along this link to a post on Put This On – which, aside from being a cool site I hadn’t seen before about dressing like an adult (something I attempt to avoid at all costs, according to my wife and closet) – had some bummer news about The Cooperstown Ballcap Company. It seems that the company is going to be limiting its production of old school-style baseball caps – you know, serious wool, serious logos and stitching, and so forth – after the end of this year. So, it would seem that this is a good time to go score an orange 1975 Houston Astros home cap, or better yet, a 1975 Columbus (GA) Astros hat, which looks JUST like the Houston one, but with a “C” on it.

The team formerly known as the Columbus Astros still exists today, by the way, just as the Carolina Mudcats (logo to the right).
